Tuesday on Rich Ranch

These past few weeks have been really difficult to post a message. Now the main stream of our business is over for the year and we can look forward to a bit of rest to rejuvenate ourselves. Not that you really rest on the farm. There is always something to do, but we will be resting from the kids.

So today is Tuesday and the past few days have been smoking hot. In comparison to the weather we had last week this time when our Botswana visitors were here. Last week we thought it was winter all over again. A cold front hit us and with that we had rain. It was freezing, we even had the hot water bottles going again.

All the seed that were planted are coming up in green rows and the rain that we had came just at the right time. We are just hoping that the rain does not stay away now like it does some years. It is crucial that the crops get regular rain now while they are still small.

We are still having the cows drop their babies. I am not sure what the count is at the moment. We will soon be getting our bulls to visit and get working. The cows really look good this year seeing that we fed them so well this past winter.

We have two dogs on the farm. We have Capone, named after the gangster “Al” but turned out to be the biggest pussycat pit bull in the world. He is scared of absolutely everything and sleeps his life away. He’s a real honey though – a little bit dumb but he will be your best friend. Then there is Ntombi the Labrador. She is so intelligent and just loves being around all the kids that visit here on the farm. She would play soccer with them, lead them on their hikes and even dive into the dam and retrieve the rope necessary to get the whole Zip Line system going speedily. Over the past few months we noticed she was getting slower and slower, and then one evening she could not get up off her sleeping mat. Since then it has been downhill for her. Her hips are collapsing and she is getting worse by the day. It is quite painful to watch. Even Capone misses her antics and her giving him a hard time. It is really very sad.
