Toll Gate - Good Traffic Flow |
If you know the South African people you will really appreciate this.
|
Signs - Hand Crafted |
In December and January when we had the floods that caused so much damage, the secondary road between Middelburg and Witbank was severely damaged and the bridge over the Olifants River was washed away. There is a tremendous amount of traffic on this road each day so they all had to be diverted to the highway where you ended up paying a R40 toll if you just travelled that short distance.

Slight Detour - Good Signage |
We are now in October and the municipalities of both towns have not made any attempt to do repairs. The provincial government has also turned a blind eye to the problem. There are many university students from Middelburg that travel this road to Witbank that just cannot afford the extra R80 a day and not even their complaints to the authorities made a difference.
Now one thing you must know about the South Africans. We are ingenuous and we will always find a solution. We have to find a solution or we will be left behind in this country.
The locals started building and repairing the smaller bridges over the river and now you have a choice of routes to cross.
South Africans being very good entrepreneurs of course put up their own toll gate and I have the photos to prove it to you. A saving of R 30 each way. They not only make good money but the public save as well.
Only in South Africa and this is the year 2011.
