New Calves on Rich Ranch

It’s that lovely time of the year when the calves arrive and over the past two days the first calves arrived. There are five in total and they have very protective mothers guarding them all day. All the calves will arrive in the next three months because the bulls where with the mothers for only three months. The whole cattle cycle is now in place and it’s getting easier to maintain. All get their injections and the same, get dipped at the same time and have their babies at the same time. This means that the babies are all the same age and they get all their injections at the same time, get de-horned at the same time. The whole system is more time efficient.
We are still waiting for a good rain to fall. Last night we thought we would have showers as the clouds built up but then a wind came in from the south east and it was all gone. We don’t need to take drastic measures yet but we really need the rain. It seems as if all the farmers are on standby so that when the rain falls they will jump into planting mode.
