Monday on Rich Ranch

Well it was work, work, work for us on the weekend (our other business – I do hope you have checked it out www.richranch.blogspot.com ) This side of our business has its busiest time of the year now. We have a school here the whole week so I am not sure how much blogging I will be able to do.

We are still waiting for our rains, but it does look promising with rainclouds on the horizon every day. The last of the ploughing and the adding of the lime will be done this week and we are all ready and set to plant. Just need the rain.

So far this season the first 23 have arrived. One just disappeared after a few days of being born and this could be for quite a few reasons. It could be jackal or even leopard, or it could have fallen down an ant bear hole. There are loads of the ant bear holes all over the farm. These are a menace because we have even had the cows getting stuck in them. You should see us trying to get them out. You have to get the old girl all tied around the body with straps and then we need all our staff and the bakkie to haul her out there. You can imagine how traumatised they are after an ordeal like that.

It is because of events like this that we can never slaughter and consume our own cattle. Once she has looked at you with those big brown eyes pleading for help or once you have stood by a cow as she has given birth, you will know what I am talking about. We still eat our steaks, but just someone else’s cows.

Enjoy your Monday all you city folk
