Sugar Graze on Rich Ranch

I had a rest this week but we are waiting for a group to arrive that will be staying the weekend.

Richard on the other hand has been as industrious as ever. The lands are ready and with 22mm of rain this week, he is ready to plant his feed for next year. He mainly plants sugar graze and I actually looked it up in the dictionary but found no entry for it. I am going to Google it because I now have to know more about it. All that I know is that the cattle go gaga for this stuff. I’ll let you know as soon as I know more about it.

This sugar graze gets cut and chopped up fine and put in a heap with layers of salt in between. It is covered with plastic and kept airtight for about three to four months and is then ready for feeding to the cattle. It is normally ready to feed during the winter months when they really need it. They are all pregnant then – or they should be if the bull has been doing his job – and need the extra feed. It actually ferments and smells like a brewery when it is opened up. They get feed this once a day, so maybe they are getting sloshed once a day, that’s why they love the stuff. Anyway it keeps them looking good and healthy through the winter.

I am one of those analytical people and keeps stats of everything. So I can tell you that we have had more than double amount of rain this October compared to last year October. Veld is looking beautiful. I’ll let you have some photos soon.
